Simplify: Master Bath

This is my first project for the week. Our master bathroom is small and has accumulated a lot of items that we don’t use regularly, as well as things that shouldn’t be stored in such prime real estate. My goal is to make progress, not to get my whole house decluttered in a week. All of that stuff didn’t accumulate in one day. I want to give myself time to get through it, besides, I still have a family to feed and children to educate.Master bath before

My first step is to gather some containers, a trash can, a box for things that we will keep but should be stored elsewhere and a box for things to be given away. I remove everything from under the sink, the medicine cabinet and that set of shelves and sort it into one of the containers or in a pile of things that will stay in this area.

Now I decide that I want to get rid of those shelves. We have a medicine cabinet in which we should be able to store all of our grooming essentials and we have space under the sink for some of the larger items like a hair dryer and curling iron. This idea of defining my area helped me tremendously in evaluating and getting rid of more things. (More on this later.)

I mentioned before that this is a small space. I  was still able to get rid of a medium sized box full of things that we didn’t use and I moved some items (extra bottles of shampoo and deodorant) into our other bathroom. Here are my results:Master Bath after
I used these cute little shot glasses (Yard sale find, nearly 20 of these glasses plus some other unique glassware and a basket for $1 and you wonder how come I have a clutter problem. In my defense I purchased these to use as containers for all the bouquets of fresh flowers that the children bring in during the spring and summer. Dandelions and clover look charming displayed in these tiny glasses.) for my daily make-up essentials.makeup in shot glasses

Tune in for a much larger project tomorrow, our art closet!

    Hi Kimberly -

Thanks for visiting my blog! I look forward to looking around your site and comparing notes!

I really liked this post. What a difference it made to remove the shelf! I love the blue walls – most of my home is painted blue – such a nice soothing color.

I look forward to your post on the art closet!

    Blessings,
    Nancy

It looks awesome. I used to have one of those shelf-systems above my toilet too. But I hated it. Just one slight bump would send the contents into shambles. I like how you decluttered. The shot glasses look great for holding make-up essentials. I would’ve never thought since we don’t drink and have never owned shot glasses. But I have seen them at garage sales. Now I might actually pick up a few next time I see some! My bin I have right now for make-up and supplies is just too big and the stuff rolls around in it and gets jumbled. Little glasses like that would fit right into my medicine cabinet.

I love the progress of decluttering you’re doing. Keep up the great work!

I love the shot glass idea! I have some laying around the house being unused. I have used them to hold flowers before, but this is a year ’round idea. Thanks. I would take some decluttering pics but it’s too embarrassing! I took 5 bags/boxes of things to goodwill today. Yay for spring cleaning/decluttering!

    Thanks all.

    Nancy,
I like blue also. Our master bedroom and bath is all blue and white. We really enjoy it. Except right now our master bedroom is a wreck. That is on my decluttering list. Not looking forward to that!

    Nikki,
Yes, I hated that shelf. I’m so happy that it is out of my bathroom.

    Mama Bear,
No excuses. We all have those spaces. You did see my post on the art closet, right?? Yeah for bags to the goodwill. It is such a great feeling.

    Blessings,
    Kimberly

We can’t remove our toilet shelf… it’s the ONLY storage we have in our ONLY tiny bathroom. We don’t have a medicine cabinet and our sink is like a bird bath… no cabinet to hold our stuff. I wonder what on earth they were thinking when they designed it… :/
