This is re-post from the early days (all of 4 months ago) of Raising Olives. This tip has made meal times a bit tidier for everyone in the Raising Olives household.
We use cloth napkins in our house or more accurately we use washcloths. This not only saves money, but is terrific for the many spills that occur during mealtimes with children. The wash cloths are fabulous for spills, major or minor, as well as for grimy faces and hands. One washcloth will clean the baby even after he has
played in eaten his spaghetti.

To avoid washing hundreds of washcloths every day, each person has their own unique napkin ring. We made ours, but it would also be fun to shop for a special napkin ring for each member of the family. When we finish a meal each person looks over their napkin and if it is clean they put it back in the napkin ring. Then they all go into a drawer or basket until the next meal. After dinner each day all washcloths are put in the laundry keeping the amount of washcloths washed in a given day to a minimum.
Don’t forget the rule: at the end of the day ALL washcloths go into the laundry. Unless, that is, you LIKE things growing on your napkin, but um, we wouldn’t know anything about that because we always follow rules in this house.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Where did you get your wash cloths? I can’t find some that are plain and inexpensive but not cheap! Hmmmmm….are we having trouble finding the time to post something new?
I’m sorry I couldn’t resist. You will speak to me when I see you again right?!

Awesome idea!

P.S. If you knit or crochet you can make each family member their own color-coded napkins (such as one family has all orange, another member has all pink, etc.).

This is a great idea! Now, to find cute, affordable washcloths!

This is by far the funniest thing you have posted yet. You are recycling a post about recycled napkins… I know, you’re just trying to show everyone how frugal you are, I mean why draw the line at recycling paper when you can recycle internet paper as well.

I keep meaning to ask you where you got your napkin rings — I have tried phoning around but no-one seems to have unfinnished napkin rings???

Helen,
I found those years ago, before we had children at an outlet called Dixie Pottery. I might check with a JoAnn’s or Michael’s or another art/craft store type store. I know that they have other unfinished wooden items. If you don’t find them or don’t want to bother, check out these links unfinished Birch napkin ring 4 pack for $2.19 or these have a little more detail 2 for $1.80.
Seth,
OK. That is pretty funny, but I write a lot of funny things, how can you say that is the funniest??
MomStarr,
I found the wash cloths at Home Goods. They came in multi-colored sets and I purchased enough sets to have my own matching sets of each color. Don’t forget to look at regular bath wash cloths. I actually think that those are what mine are, bath cloths.
Joy,
I love the idea of knitting napkin rings, why didn’t I think of that first? It would also work if you used the same color yarn for all of them but used distinct decorative beads or charms for each person. Great tip!
Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Blessings,
Kimberly

I love this idea! We use cloth napkins around here! They stay in a big pile in the center of the table all day long. I would like to give this idea a try. They would look neat and tidy w/ napkin rings and in a basket:)
