SpellQuizzer Giveaway and Review

This giveaway is now closed and a winner has been announced.

If you have nine children and give each of them a weekly spelling test throughout their school years, you will have given over 3,800 spelling tests.  If you give quizzes or help your children practice their lists, well you get the idea.  Spelling anyone?  What if I told you that I knew a way for you to save yourself more than 3,400 of those spelling test?  Interested?

SpellQuizzer is not a complete spelling program, it is a way to implement any spelling program more easily into your homeschool.  Do you use “Spelling Power”? SpellQuizzer will work for you.  Abeka, Bob Jones? SpellQuizzer.  Does your child dream of being the spelling bee national champion? SpellQuizzer can help.

SpellQuizzer is a computer program that allows you to enter any spelling lists that you wish.  It will then test or quiz your child on the list whenever he is ready, giving immediate feedback when your child misses a word.

Entering spelling words into SpellQuizzer is fast and easy.  You will need to have a microphone or a computer with a built-in microphone.

To enter a spelling word:

  • Type the word
  • Click start
  • Say the word and use the word in a sentence
  • Click stop
  • Click add word

It honestly is as simple as that and took me less time that it would have taken to give an actual spelling test.    You only need to add the list once and then your child can use it to review, quiz or test.  Better yet as other children reach that level they can use the same test.

SpellQuizzer immediately corrects your child when they misspell a word, giving them the correct spelling so that they have instant feedback and don’t get the incorrect spelling stuck in their head.

SpellQuizzer also has a feature that makes it super simple to compile  review lists for your child.  It has a menu of all the words that are entered into SpellQuizzer and you simply check the words that you would like to add to the new spelling list.  No typing or recording new sentences necessary.

Here is my caveat.  In our home we don’t teach spelling using a spelling curriculum or giving weekly tests.  However, there are times when I want our children to memorize a list of words that they have difficulty spelling and SpellQuizzer has been good for helping me implement that.

Our 10 year old son was the first to try SpellQuizzer while I went downstairs to Mark’s office.  A moment later there was a knock on the door and five other children flooded in, talking over one another, “May I take a spelling test next?”  Our don’t-watch-TV, don’t-play-video-games, children think that SpellQuizzer is entertainment and beg to take each new test.  I recorded funny sentences about them and their siblings and even silly promises that I, of course, keep,  (i.e.”If you get 100% on this spelling test, I will give you seventeen kisses.”)  so they look forward to hearing what new sentences are going to be on each test.

Pros:

  • Super fast and easy to add words.
  • Fun for the children to do their spelling tests.
  • Immediate correction if a word is misspelled, showing the child the correct spelling.
  • An option to redo missed words.
  • Compatible with any spelling program.
  • Gives the child the opportunity to go over the words that he/she missed.
  • Terrific for children who have difficulties with fine motor skills (writing).  It takes those frustrations out of working on spelling.
  • Several free down loadable spelling lists including Dolch’s sight words.
  • You can share spelling lists with others who have SpellQuizzer.

Cons:

  • Doesn’t have a way for parent to keep track of how many or which words were missed.
  • More down-loadable spelling lists would be nice

LOL Can I ever relate to the five children piling up asking, “May I do a test next?” !! :-) Too cool. I use Sequential Spelling right now. This would be a great supplement. I could even put the spelling lists from there into SpellQuizzer.

What a cool software! I think it would be great to have – even for my hubby, who is a horrible speller. I told him he could be in charge of the kids’ spelling, and that they would be able to learn together.

Thanks so much for the giveaway. Big fan of your blog, have had it in my “bloglines” account for quite a while now. I am loving the Not Me Mondays, the How We Homeschool series, AND I am DEFINITELY going to make a magnet chalk board wall in my house, yay! I am starting homeschooling with my oldest two this next year, so this would be a great tool to add to our arsenal. Thanks again!

I have a question…Do you *HAVE* to have a microphone on your computer to use SpellQuizer?

Thank you for your time! I am enjoying your reviews and will definitely keep checking back!

    [Reply]

    Raising Olives Reply:

You do not have to have a microphone on your computer. SpellQuizzer has a place to type in a hint phrase in case you aren’t using the audio.
