My favorite gifts are often things people have madde for me, so I like making gifts to give. One year my husband made doll beds for both of our girls. I made foam mattresses and bedding for them.

We are going to be giving our first family photos as Christmas gifts to everyone this year. It is very special b/c it is the first pictures we have had taken as a family (and with the new baby). We are so excited to see everyone’s faces at Christmas. Thanks for such a great giveaway.

Our favorite gift to give is portraits of the kiddos! Especially to our family in another state. This year, however, we are going to help buy Grandmommy an iPod so she can listen to her favorite songs!

I think the greastest gifts are photo related – a special picture in a frame, a personalized calendar of family pictures, a photo book…Especially for the older, not so technical crowd. Nothing pleases Grandpa better than a picture of him and his 2 year old grandson sharing a special moment in a frame that spells it out – GRANDPA AND ME!

Not so much a specific gift idea but rather a gift giving tradition. When my kids were very little, the elves started to visit. They would start about 10 or 12 days before Christmas and leave little gifts all related to Christmas – might be a tree ornament, a pair of Christmas socks, a Santa mug. If there was a popular Christmas movie, like Charlie Brown’s Christmas or the Santa Clause, the children would miraculously find it playing one evening. One year I found phone cards so they could call Santa. You get the idea.
I did this because I felt that it was a fun way to make Christmas longer than just one day. Even though my children are now 14 and 16, they want to know if the elves are still going to come this year. Rumors are, yes … never to old to enjoy surprises.

My favorite gift was last year, when after a month in the hospital with a burned child, we were all HOME for Christmas. It was the best one ever.

Hi Kimberly, thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment. You’re right, seeing a large family that belongs to someone else always looks bigger than your own. I’d love to enter your poster giveaway.
This year, we are doing several handmade gifts for two reasons…we don’t need to clutter our house with additional toys, and also because my husband is not employed at the moment so we are on a tighter budget. One of my younger sons has been wanting an apron to wear while helping in the kitchen, so my third daughter made one for him. My oldest is making a lap quilt for one of her younger sisters. We’re going to make some felt play food for my two-year old daughter. And, the most fun…I’m going to attempt to make a fabric playhouse that fits over a card table. You can see an example at http://homemadebyjill.blogspot.com/2009/10/felt-playhouse.html I also enjoy taking a family trip as a “gift” for Christmas. Those are just some of the ideas for now.

I love to give and get homemade gifts! They are the best! Last year instead of traveling we had a simple Christmas at home. It was my favorite. We stayed in our PJ’s all day, we cooked together, played together, and had an awesome, relaxing day!

My son and I always make gifts for the grandparents. This year baby sister will be included in the gift making! One year we made cay ornaments with his handprint, another time we made things out of his drawings. He loves that when he gives the gift it is something he did himself.

Kimberly,
I’m new to your site and am enjoying your blog a great deal. We’ve received and/or given many special gifts through the years, but for the last several years we’ve been working hard to shift our focus to worship of King Jesus, the ultimate gift. When we do this the season seems more fresh, more tender, and we find that we are again and again amazed by grace. When it comes to gift exchange, we have especially enjoyed crafting something handmade that reflects the interests or needs of the receiver. And, that’s saying a lot for our family b/c I’m not a crafty mom!

One year we made personalized calendars for the grandparents. I always try to make all my A’s homemade gifts each year. Any suggestions for older boys? Last year we did pillows and the year before nap blankets for everyone

Mama Olive, would it be possible to e-mail you directly about an off-topic, no-idea-how-to-raise-toddlers, frustrated-Mama-Knitter question? I’m hoping for a succinct, 32-word response that results in a beautifully behaved toddler and a well-rested mama. Have I come to the right department?

Email away, but I never answer anything in less than 32 words and the results are the Lord’s.

This year I made my 86 year old in laws a sort of advent gift. 25 large envelopes with scrapbook pages to open each day of December. We all wrote personal notes on each page.

Oh, let’s see where to start? We love homemade gifts and this year’s gifts will be no exception. There’ll be aprons, knitted purses, knitted scarves, and lovie blankets (colorful fleece blankets for babes and toddlers with different colored and textured ribbons around the edges). There’ll also be slippers, wooden swords and daggers (for Narnia pretend play – the girls are sewing the dresses for the county fair), and a toolbox for our all-boy toddler. My favorite though, by far, is the animal messenger bags that I’m making (six of) for my girls and some nieces and nephews. It just the cutest thing I ever saw. Here’s a link to the pattern if you want to peek:

We bought a white plastic tissue box for my Dad, then covered it with bright colored circles of paper which had photos of our family glued to them. We then put shellac on the whole thing. Turned out really nice and it still sits on his dresser.

I make felt food for my son and his family and friends. They love it, and I love how sweet he is when he serves me the food he “makes”!

I secretly took pictures of relatives’ houses and am painting pictures of their houses (in watercolor) for their gifts. Also, I make a different Christmas ornament each year for my daughter’s grandparents with her name, age and date on them.

Just being able to stay at home with the family Christmas day and go to church is the best and not having to go all around town all day!
