AVKO is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping everyone, regardless of learning disabilities or dyslexia to learn to read and spell. AVKO works toward this goal by developing affordable materials and techniques to teach reading, spelling, handwriting and keyboarding. The AVKO website has many free resources for homeschoolers and parents, both teaching aids and a selection of articles. Sequential Spelling, a seven level spelling program designed to teach the patterns of English spelling, was born from the research and ideas of Don McCabe, research director for AVKO.
An AVKO membership can be purchased for $25 for an entire year and includes many benefits.
- Free down loadable books – “Patterns of English Spelling” (all 10 volumes), “To Teach a Dyslexic”, “Starting at Square One”, “The Teaching of Reading and Spelling: a Continuum from Kindergarten through College”, “The Reading Teachers List of over 5,500 Basic Spelling Words”
- Several of Don McCabe’s most popular workshop recordings
- AVKO newsletter
- Supplemental curriculum
- 25% discount on all printed AVKO material
With an AVKO membership, time and commitment you could design your own spelling program if you desired. There is also a lot of help and insight if you are dealing with dyslexia. There is a lot of information available with an AVKO membership and while our family enjoyed some of the supplemental ideas, most of the information is not what we are looking for.
If you are interested or use Sequential Spelling, wish to design and use your own customized spelling program or have children with dyslexia or other difficulties with reading or spelling, then an AVKO membership may be very useful to you.
AVKO gave me a complementary year long membership in order to facilitate this review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
