Not Me Monday: Colby, of Course

While playing Candyland with Colby (3) and Savannah (4), I realized that perhaps Colby got a little too much “Star Wars” viewing time during our small family weekend . When Colby drew the Queen Frostine card and did not say, “Look momma, Princess Leah”.

When Colby left the dinner table to use the bathroom, he did not return bouncing on one of our over-sized bouncy balls and try to get into his seat on said ball.  We do have some standards for table manners at our house.

I did not have to leave the worship service twice yesterday because of morning sickness.  Nope, I’ve gone through this 9 times already, morning sickness does not get the best of me anymore.

I did not lay down for a rest yesterday afternoon only to wake as Mark and the children were RETURNING from the evening worship service.  Nope, not me.

Anyone have any morning sickness helps they want to share?  Not sure I’m game to try KimC’s at Life in a Shoe solution to morning sickness, a bean diet, that makes me feel worse just thinking about it.  (OK, I just re-read her post and I’ll consider it.) Any other suggestions?

My sickness has been worse and longer with each pregnancy! Thankful for older daughters who could cook dinner (I felt worse later in the day). I would get in my bed, cover my head with the sheets and blankets and suck on those amazingly strong peppermint Altoids while the girls cooked dinner. Taking my vitamins and extra B helped as well. I would really start lagging without the extra B vitamins. I need to get back on them!! Hope you have a better day today.

I can’t tell you how encouraging this comment has been to me. I’ve also noticed and increase in my nausea, especially these last 3 pregnancies. Knowing that others are so incapacitated that laying in bed with covers over their heads is the only option has given me some peace. Thank you Anita.

I will be praying for you Kimberly. I have been blessed with this pregnancy to only have one battle with morning sickness thus far… I am at 10 weeks currently. The last two pregnancies I was sick for months. What helped me was getting plenty of rest, I usually became sick when I was overtired. I have also found that nibbling on saltine crackers (Olde Cape Cod brand is what I like the best) and sipping gingerale helped me. It seems as though each woman has different triggers so I tried avoiding my triggers.

I can related to the child who is obsessed with Star Wars… my boys don Vader masks and run around with light sabers. :)

Lifting you up in prayer today,
    Dawna

Sea Bands. I always get horrible morning sickness. Vitamin B too! I ended up taking antinausea meds because I couldn’t keep anything down, but still felt yucky without my sea bands. They really work and are all natural. What also helped was freezing water bottles and carrying them around with me. Sipping water helped and when I felt puky I would put them up against my forehead or on my wrists. Hope you feel better soon!

Never tried Sea Bands, but my mom is bringing some down tomorrow. Hoping they help.

I also like the idea of the cold water bottles, cool does seem to help.

I know you already know this, but what helped me the most was eating many tiny meals. No matter how I felt, I forced myself to take a couple of bites of a saltine or a few pieces of dry cereal. And of course grabbing a nap whenever possible. (I know that one is easier said than done.)

Hi! I read somewhere that nausea during pregnancy is due to dehydration. It is your bodys and the baby’s bodys way of telling you to drink alot more water. Not sure if this works since I just read it and am not pregnant, but if you can try to drink extra water (even though I don’t think water sounds good when I’m queasy….)it might work. Let me know if you try it (reminds me of the man being told to bathe in the water and he’ll be healed, but he wanted to do something more elaborate/dramatic to be healed…).

    Love – Kelly

    Kimberly @ Raising Olives Reply:

Thanks Kelly. At the beginning of each pregnancy we assign one child to fill and bring my water bottle to me and remind me (gently) to drink. Another child gets the gingerale, saltine cracker duty. :)

Dip your finger in some ginger (the spice) and then touch it to the end of your tongue. It is not the best tasting fix, but within minutes it would calm my raging sick feelings down.

Beans really did help me this pregnancy.LOL I would eat a bean burrito for lunch everyday and it really seemed to calm my stomach. I didn’t even KNOW about the “bean diet” but it did help. A great recipe that makes a whole protein is Moosewood’s bean recipe.

    2 cups pintos
    1 onion chopped
    2-3 cloves garlic minced
    2 tsp cumin
    1/4 tsp black pepper
    1/2 cup brown rice
    2 tbsp olive oil
salt to taste when beans are soft

Put everything in a pot, except salt and cover with 6 cups water. Bring to boil and simmer all day. When the beans are soft, add salt. These will be thick and you’ll need to check on them often towards the end or they’ll burn on the bottom. These beans are wonderful, cheap, and filling.

    Blessings,

    Lisa in Jax

Peppermint always helped me. I also enjoyed wintergreen lifesaver mints as well. It helps for nausea even when you aren’t pregnant. Well at least it works for me. I hope it keeps working because an all bean diet doesn’t sound appealing to me but I am glad it is working for Kim.

I drank some peppermint tea this morning and my nausea headache went away. Today was my best day in a while. I’m hoping it wasn’t just a coincidence. :) Amber (13) says at dinner, “Mom, I think we need to run to the store and stock up on that tea.” So sweet to have compassionate children.

I am blessed in that I generally only get morning sickness in the first trimester.

Very interesting what Kelly said about the water. I know most of us don’t get enough water and it does soooo much for us. I’d be interested to try that one!
What has done wonders for me is to smell, lick, or suck on lemon wedges. Probably not that great for my teeth, but could curb nausea in an instant, especially if I got still and quiet with my lemon. :)
Stress and hurrying seems to be one of my triggers, so I had to be careful on Sunday mornings trying to get everyone out the door and stay calm! :)

I am so glad to hear that even after nine times it is still hard. I have only done it four times and I was wondering why I couldn’t just “get used to it.” I try to be patient with myself but when you have been prgnant 36 months out of the past seven years it becomes a way of life that you have to learn to deal with.

I am praying that you find something that works for you. I haven’t found (don’t think it is out there) one magic “cure” that works all the time. Different things have helped me through each time. Praying you can focus on the blessing that is causing it and make it through one day at a time.

    Kimberly @ Raising Olives Reply:

Thank you for your prayers. Between pregnancies I think, “Next time I’m just going to tough it out and keep going. I don’t know why I’m such a wimp when I’m pregnant.” Then it hits! Nope, not used to it and can’t ignore it, but I can thank God for His mercy!

But you should know that every pregnancy is different and what might have helped you in your other pregnancies might not work with this one.

    Kimberly,
Aside from eating a lot of beans (not as bad as it sounds, and there seems to be a cumulative effect) I find that Altoids Cinnamon mints help. You know, the ones in a red rectangular tin that say, “curiously strong.” They’re strong and not very sweet and seem to distract a queasy belly.
Like another reader, I also find that lemon helps. I make a sort of hot lemonade with a tablespoon or two of lemon juice, a bit of honey and hot water in a coffee mug. Sipping this helps a lot when nothing else wants to stay down.
    Hope you feel better soon!

I don’t have a solution, but I’m anxiously awaiting one that I haven’t tried. So far, I’ve tried all of the above but I still get what the doctors call ‘hyperemesis gravidum’ which means excessive vomiting. For 6-10 weeks. Yuck! I saw on another blog something about a supplement that was ginger and one other ingredient, and somehow, together, they worked wonders. I’m still trying to find the name of it and find a bottle for myself. I need a pro-active solution before the next pregnancy!

well hello there after a forever leave. I am so excited to be back here reading your posts. It is so nice to hear you are expecting again. How wonderful. I don’t have a remedy for morning sickness as I had it with all of my kids from morning till night. The only time I didn’t have it was when I was sleeping. I do know that if you can drink milk (I can’t- I have a chocolate drink-non dairy) milk or {chocolate/strawberry} milk will help settle the stomach as does saltine crackers and also 7-up.

Be do drop by my site again as I have come back home to blogspot again and would love to have you visit.

I would try to have a cola first thing in the morning because it still tasted nice when it came back up… and it masked the yellow bile that would otherwise be vomited.

The only other thing that fixed morning sickness for me was the end of labour…

I totally understand the logic! I threw up that yucky bile every morning with my first pregnancy and then sipped juice the rest of the day.

A doctor recommended Unisom and B6 at about 20 weeks with my second pregnancy. With my third pregnancy, I have taken Unisom and B6 alternated with Odansetron (Zolfran). Since about 20 weeks, I only need the Odansetron when I go out, but still need to take the Unisom and B6 at night.

I hate taking the medication and I hate funtioning at such a low level all the time. I feel so unproductive. We wanted so badly to have a large family, but it’s so hard to consider another pregnancy with morning sickness and three little kids running around.

I’m inspired by moms who have endured so many pregnancies with bad morning sickness.

When I got pregnant with my third, I vowed to try anything and had success with acupuncture. The more I went, the better I felt and only vomited twice the whole pregnancy. I am so sorry you are having Morning sickness, but am greatful for your Faith and your last blog update. It is hard to not complain when you don’t feel good and you are going about this so gracefully! I love to see God working!
I also was sick with all my pregnancies, but more with my girl (3rd child) and last boy(4th). I had hyperthyroidism with my last and never knew it with the other preganancies and this is something that doesn’t go away unless you take meds your whole life. It has gone away and I had to take medicine during my pregnancy. Although I don’t recommend this medicine (PTU), but I feared losing the baby at the time. The only thing that helped with my 24 hour per day nausea was Zofran. It is also a medicine, for nausea, but helped me get through my days and they say it is safe. I was since dx. with Celiac disease and I think that was the cause of my thyroid levels and possibly my morning sickness. Have you tried going gluten free for a couple weeks to see if that helps with morning sickness? Praying for you!

Just scanning through the morning sickness remedies brings back such memories. Thank You, Lord, for menopause! :-)

We are not pop drinkers as a family, but ginger ale was a constant during morning sickness time. I hated knowing that I was taking in so many empty calories! My solution – I diluted it half and half with water. Still worked about as well as the straight ginger ale (which means it worked some times/didn’t work others) but I felt better about what was going in to my body!
