Not Me Monday: Snow and the ER

Feel free to link up your 90 Day Challenge post here.
We feed our children daily, so there is no way that Nicholas (1) would feels the need to EAT his toys.

We would not allow Colby (3) to pick up a bowl of M & M’s and lick the entire top layer of them.  If he had done that we would have dumped out the whole bowl of M & M’s.  We would not have picked out as many damp M &  M’s as we could find and then allowed the children to continue using the rest to decorate their gingerbread houses. :P

When Colby (3) came to the sliding glass door saying he was ready to come in after playing out in the snow for all of 3 1/2 minutes, I did not tell him to go play a little longer.  It did not take him pressing his nose and cheek up against the window for 5 minutes while watching me work in the kitchen to convince me that he really was finished playing outside.

When Colby had a rash I dutifully looked it up on Google.  I found this advice:

Rashes are rarely urgent and almost never require an urgent page to your doctor.  In fact, there is basically only one rash that requires immediate medical evaluation.

“Excellent”, I thought and scrolled to the bottom of the page to make sure that what Colby had wasn’t  “the one rash that requires an urgent page to your doctor or ER visit right away”.

We did NOT spend the next several hours in the ER because Colby had THE ONE rash.  *sigh*

When Alyssa (9) asked if Nicholas (1) could go outside to play in the snow, I told her to make sure that he had on shoes and socks, a hat and something to keep his hands warm.  A few moments later as Alyssa was opening the door for Nicholas to go out into the 15 degree, snow covered yard,  I did not realize that she had taken me too literally.   I did not then explain that he also needed to have on pants and a coat.

I did not allow Nicholas (1) to go out and play in the snow with socks on his hands because we couldn’t find his pair of mittens.

Serious update for grandparents and those who know our family in real life:  Colby did have a petechial rash, but they were able to rule out nearly all of the serious causes.  We are still waiting to be sure nothing grows out on his blood cultures, but basically the doctor says that as long as it goes away and doesn’t come back there should be nothing to worry about.

Well, a little man definitely needs his pants if he’s going to play in the snow. Ha!

LOL, I think Colby always has a big week. Is it just 3 year olds, or just MY 3 year old? :)

But you’re assuming that OUR house is normal. :) You are not the only ones, but the normal part is still up for debate.

Well, as she explains it. She put socks on his feet that were way too big for him, so they covered up most of his legs. :) She’s right, he had on big brothers socks. I really should have gotten a picture!

Diane – Thanks for letting me know about your giveaway. The art is lovely, but your blog will not allow me to comment. I’m not sure if it’s a problem on my end or yours, but thought you’d like to know.

so funny.. my one year old tried to follow his brothers outside in a diaper also.. and mine also had socks on thier hands… (in the past becuase of no gloves available) last time becuase thier gloves had gotton to wet in the snow…

    Kimberly @ Raising Olives Reply:

I have to admit that socks on the hands are a common substitute at our house. Although now that I’ve started knitting we have more gloves and mittens around than ever before. :)

P.S. I was SO excited to read the bible with you all, but I didn’t get home from vacation until the 5th, and then the kids had 3 snowdays last week… no real excuse, but I dropped the ball- sigh! Maybe next year?! I’m very sad I missed out :-(

You could also just start right now. A few of the readers are doing it on a delayed schedule. Besides it’s more fun to do it with a group.

How about getting it in before that baby comes? ;)

I have “true” Florida babies. They love to run around barefoot and the first thing they do when they get home is take off their shoes and socks. For Christmas, we went to Colorado and stayed with dear friends of ours. When my eight year old saw snow for the first time that he can remember and he was so excited to play. He ran outside barefoot. It was probably a nanosecond later that he learned how cold snow is!

Thank you Heather. I actually made some progress on that yesterday so will hopefully post more in that series next week.

Colby went for a follow up with our regular pediatrician and he was very encouraging.

    Thank you for your prayers.

How is Emma doing? I’ve been praying for her and for you. Please let me know.

That analysis of a rash very rarely being an emergency has me concerned.

Years ago … one of my daughters had a petchiae rash and it turned out that she had Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (I.T.P.), a very serious disease that took a weekend in the hospital (on iv meds) and then months of weekly blood tests and treatment.

Then, 4 years ago we almost lost our 3 year old to a “rash”. The doctors told us that if we had not rushed him to ER at 1:00 a.m., he would have most likely been dead by morning. (We took him to ER because of what I found when I “googled” his symptoms.) He had bacterial meningitis, which caused his whole body to shut down … he had 100+ 3rd degree burns covering his body … he was in a coma for a week, and ICU for 2 weeks (on dialysis and heart meds).

So … yea … rashes can be QUITE serious!!!

Thanks for the heads up Laurel. I.T.P. is one of the things the doctors looked at with his rash, but everything looked good.

Didn’t know that bacterial meningitis could present with a rash.
