This is great and makes me feel so adequate, I have 6 boys and 1 girl, and I know about all the constant noise. I am really begining to realize, that keeping their hearts is more important, than getting everything done. You are a super mom! I thank you so much for your blog.

Hi Elizabeth,

My husband and I do not have a problem with our children playing war and guns, so we haven’t had to face that issue. We don’t let our boys involve our girls and our girls are uninterested, but beyond that we are fine with it.

I would just say to state your expectations clearly and consistently enforce your standards.

Thanks for sharing! Just curious, how do you address with your kids playing war, and using guns. It seems to be a constant battle around our house. They pick it up from other friends, but my husband and I feel that it isn’t Christ-like. A constant struggle!

This is incredible!!! I just finished reading all four of your posts from yesterday — that took about an hour! Wow, what crazy and BLESSED lives you all leave. I have four but don’t homeschool except in the summer because I don’t like long breaks from routine. Each year I find it harder to send them back to school because truly, the more I’m with them, the more I enjoy them. They are currently 11, 9, 7, and 6. . .I love being a mom!!!! Thanks for these very real glimpses into your lives…I see now what my working-mom-friend-of-seven daily life must look like before-and-after school (she’s a teacher) — details like meals and chores. Whew! This makes me admire you all soooooooooooooooo much more!!!!

There is a lot of great help out there for beginning homeschoolers.

When our oldest was 5 we didn’t do nearly the this much school and we frequently don’t get this much school done in one day. We homeschool year round so that if we don’t get everything done every day it doesn’t matter. We’ll just pick up where we left off the next day.

When our oldest was 5 I just taught her to read and then when she started wanting to write I purchased a handwriting book for her. We didn’t begin most of the other subjects until our oldest was 7.

I’ve posted about teaching reading and beginning to teach writing.

Noise still bothers me, although I’m much more tolerant and used to it now. It will still occasionally get to be too much for me and I appreciate quiet time when everyone gets a break.

One of the motivations of sending the boys downstairs to wrestle or sending them out onto the deck is noise level They need to get their energy and noise out and I prefer they do it a little farther from me than my lap.

whoa! i am exhausted just reading this. some of my days are just as crazy as this, but no where near as productive.

my husband and i are in debates about homeschooling our oldest this fall. i am not good about schedules or organization. i have 2 kids, going on 3. i am not sure if this makes me want to run for the hills i kid, i kid….. or makes me realize that if you can do this with all of your kids then maybe i can handle doing it with mine.

i write this all as my 18 mos old is in his bed squealing rather than napping, my 4 year old is having her quiet time, and my house is in utter disarray following my 3 day stomach bug.

I am so blessed by this live blogging. I have four children the oldest just turned five so we haven’t begun official homeschooling yet, just some preschool work. My house is crazy alot of days. I am so relieved to hear that you also have to break up fights and calm down toddlers. I thought my kids were just unruley. Maybe they are just normal instead?

I am wondering did the noise ever bother you. I am finding that the more of them become vocal the crazier I have become!

Also I would love love love to hear about naptimes at your house. I will search your blog and see what I can find.
