I have taken on “The Challenge” as I called it, saving money all school year and not spending on myself. I now have 25 dollars saved to donate to Haiti to help with earthquake reparations. I also always sign petitions etc. because money is limited. (I am in high school.)

So true we are (materially)bless more then we know! Yes we still have homeless people in our country but they are not the norm, and we all are not dying of hunger (let face it if we have internet access we surly have enough money to have food)

Hi. My sister sent me a link to your blog. We are are about to increase our family from 7 kids to 9. I am looking for ways to cut down our monthly budget, and be inspired with ways to bring GOD more into the day to day lives of my children.

I know, and nothing clears up my perspective more than a mission trip. Meeting people who are happy with what they have, which is usually not much, can make you come home and look at things differently.

This is something I think about often. My husband flies to Haiti and the Dominican Republic bringing critical supplies to the missionaries. I get so upset with myself when I worry about the material things. I also have a hard time reconciling my lifestyle with those in Hispanola. I really like your third question about using what God has given us in a pleasing way. I think this needs to be my emphasis so I can stop the cycle of want-guilt-forget-want-guilt…

This is great, Kimberly! I grew up on the mission field, and have a different perspective on America’s wealth. But I’ve been in America for a long time now, and it has become all too easy for me to complain in the midst of my rich blessings. Makes me think of I Tim 6:6-8: “Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.” Doesn’t even mention shelter! And then in Matthew 6:25 Jesus says, “Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”

This is a great topic, later today I will be reading those articles.
I did hear this one time, and have used it often, in thought or outloud….
WE COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR BLESSINGS.
We are truly blessed in so many ways, and yet we complain because our house isn’t the biggest and best, our Van was used and not brand new, We have a large family with all it’s trials, we make more than 80-90% of the world, but it isn’t enough, we have sloppy joes for dinner while other’s eat mud cakes… the list goes on and on.

I fully agree. YET, how do I live out my agreement. I know this, I feel this, I want to live this. But where? How? These are some things I have been asking myself for three years now. In those three years my husband and I have almost NEVER bought new, but used from a thrift store or garage sale. But really is that enough? We also try to give away to any in need, and support many ministries that minister to those in need. YET I still feel it is not enough. WHAT exactly God is calling me and my husband to, I do not know. But we are slow, I do know that

I love that you have brought up this subject. We have been trying to live a life of appreciating more and needing less. It is hard, not so much for me because I think the grass is greener on the other side because I know it isn’t but because others seem to look down on us because we don’t enter the American race for more. I think it is beautiful that you offer this concept as something to achieve. Bravo!
