Obviously this wasn't quite as clear to Pilate as it is to you.

“What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them. “Crucify him!” they shouted. “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. ~ Mark 15:12-15

Pilate did not allow Jesus to be put to death because he found him guilty of treason. In fact he explicitly states the contrary.

Jn. 19:4 ... Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him

Rather the text says,

And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

Mark 15:26 = treason

Hi Ed,

If you don’t see any contradiction between Ms. Bauer’s assertion that

Jesus was convicted of treason

and the Bible recording that Pilot said,

“I find no basis for a charge against him.”

in three different passages, then I have no argument with you.

I don’t see the contradiction. Certainly, Bauer has not quoted the NT, but rather offered us an interpretation for how the condemnation of Jesus would have been understood in the Roman legal system, and this interpretation would be shared by a good many NT scholars. After all, when Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified (Mark 15:15), what charge would he have written down as the reason he allowed this man to be crucified? Wouldn’t it be treason? And isn’t this the charge that the Jews are trying to get Pilate to agree to (John 19:12)? Or, do you object to Bauer’s statement that the Romans were in on the arrest of Jesus? Well, John 18:3, 12 mention a group of soldiers, perhaps a cohort, along with those sent from the Jewish leadership, and a likely interpretation of this group of soldiers (KJV: “band of men”; NAS: “cohort”; ESV: “band of soldiers”; NRSV: “detachment of soldiers”) is that they are Roman. So, again, I don’t see the contradiction between the words of Bauer that you quote and what the NT says about Jesus’ death.
