Moby Wrap Baby Carrier Giveaway and Review

This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to SillyGeese for winning a Moby Wrap of your choice.

Isabella sleeping in the Moby

Having  Isabella has reminded me how much time, love and attention a new baby needs and how thankful I am to be a baby wearing mom.

Babies  need to be held. Babies need to be held a lot.

It’s a beautiful privilege to be needed so, but with other responsibilities vying for my time it can make me feel a bit stretched.   Baby wearing gives Isabella and me the closeness that we both need and want, produces a strong bond, a happy baby and still allows me to fulfill my other responsibilities.

It took me a long time (7-8 kids) to find baby wearing solutions that were practical, comfortable and worked for me. I needed a good, “comfortable-for-everyday” carrier that allows me to carry my still-floppy baby and have hands free to accomplish other tasks. I needed something for the under 6 month crowd.  That’s when I discovered the Moby Wrap.

Nicholas in Moby after a 6 mile hike

What is a Moby?

The Moby is a wrap.  This means there are no stiff pieces, buckles or fasteners.  It is a large piece of 100% cotton knit fabric that you wrap around you and baby.  The Moby goes over both shoulders and around your waist distributing the babies weight very evenly and making it possible to comfortably wear your baby for hours without tired shoulders or a stiff neck.

Isabella getting ready for a nap in the Moby

It is possible to carry your baby in several different positions with the Moby.  I regularly use all of the front holds.  I use the back and hip carries occasionally.  (I can not get the baby into the back carry position without another person helping me.)

The Moby is for newborns up to children weighing 35 pounds (about 3 years) and is machine washable.  I use the Moby almost exclusively for those early months or when our little one is napping.

Our Moby experience

We got our first Moby when Nicholas (baby #9) was 2 months old and I wore him around the house in the Moby throughout the day.  He would snuggle in contentedly while I washed dishes, taught school, took kids to the bathroom or switched the laundry.  When he got tired, he would put his head on my chest and go to sleep not waking when I needed to sit down or get back up again.

Now I’m using the Moby with Isabella.  The Moby holds Isabella close to my body as if she were swaddled in a blanket and it provides wonderful head support.  When she  falls asleep in the Moby there is no flopping of her head as I move around causing her to stir or wake.  Bella’s  head is held securely against my body.

Even as our babies get older I put them in the Moby if I know that they are going to (or should) nap in the carrier.  Both Bella and Nicholas get/got some of their best naps in the Moby.

Sweet Bella in Moby

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Comfortable for mom- no shoulder or neck strain
  • Terrific for baby naps – baby is wrapped close and does not usually wake with mom’s movements
  • Keeps baby close to mom’s body – Other carriers protrude out in front making it difficult to work in the kitchen or read a book held in front of you.   The Moby keeps baby close in to your body making these tasks much easier.
  • Wrap it once and take baby in and out as needed
  • Comfortable for baby even newborns
  • Flexible – able to wrap the baby many different ways and if they fall asleep it is simple to pull some extra fabric up to support their head.
  • Nice selection of colors and designs

Cons:

  • It takes a while to get the hang of wrapping.
  • The ends drag on the ground when you’re wrapping it.  (When I go out I try to remember to wrap the Moby before we leave the house, then I just put Isabella in and out of the Moby as we get to each stop.)
  • It can get hot.

Double baby wearing

For those of you with more than one small child, I regularly wear our two youngest children (Nicholas 2 and Isabella 8 weeks) at the same time  I wrap Bella in the Moby in one of the front carries and put Nicholas in the ERGO on my back. I can generally walk several miles with both babies quite comfortably.

I love baby wearing! I borrowed a Moby Wrap from my SIL and love it but I will have to give it back and would love my own. I also use the Maya sling wrap which I also love and my hubby uses the Baby Bjorn when carrying our little guy. I think I would choose the Moby D in earth tones. :) Love your blog!

I am getting ready for my first bub, and babywearing just makes sence to me. I am planning to get an ergo, but think that a moby wrap sounds better for an infant while an ergo would probably better suit after 6 months or so. I love the looks of the ones with the patterns in the middle for the front section, like yours, except maybe a different colour.

When do you use the ergo as opposed to the moby? Is it an age thing or is one more suited to certain situations?

    [Reply]

    Kimberly @ Raising Olives Reply:

    Congratulations!!

A lot of my choice between the ERGO and Moby is an age thing. I prefer the Moby until the baby has good head control and I’m comfortable with them on my back.

I do find that I will choose one or the other in different situations. The bottom line is that I love, use and recommend BOTH. :)

I would love the Moby Wrap in the Blossom or Natural. I own one in Sienna and after having my last baby spit up frequently I know having a second one would be a wonderful blessing – I could wash one and wear the baby in the other.

I was given an Ergo 2 years ago with my 5th baby and I LOVE it!! I would definitely like to get a Moby Wrap for my next little one because it seems so much softer and cozier for a new baby. Seeing as how my little guy sucked so hard on my Ergo straps that he faded the fabric, I’d go with the Organic Moby in eggplant :)

Ok, first off, I LOVE the picture of you wearing two! My two are 12 months apart, and for the first eight months or two that was the only way I could go to the thrift store or the discount grocery! It was a workout but it worked for us! :) I don’t have an Ergo, but my Mei Tai is kind of the same idea.

I would love to have an Indigo Moby wrap! Such a pretty color.

I would like one in indigo. With our two girls, we carried them in a sling until about 2 or 3 months old when they got too long. I didn’t really like the sling because it pulled so much on one shoulder. I have an Ergo now that was given to me for when our new baby is older, but I think a wrap would be better when he is younger. Thanks for the great giveaway!

I don’t even have children yet, but I love the Moby Wrap. I always stay on the lookout for items I may want and/or need when I do have children, so that costs don’t all sneak up on me at once. My friend is an avid babywearing and even started a babywearing club. I feel so inspired and would love to have one. The earlier I practice the better I will be the day God blesses me with a little one of my own. I personally like the forest green and the navy blue one. Very pretty.

I would love the original Moby Wrap in Moss. It’s a neutral shade without being blah. I’ve worn my babies using several different carriers and always found it difficult to wear them and get things done without major backache. I’ve used a long piece of fabric to wrap my toddler on my hips and found it effective, but never tried the Moby. I would love to get a Moby for my 4th child due in October.

I would love a black moby for wearing our four week old (our 4th baby). I just bought an ergo. I love it but as you said in your post it is not the best for wearing my little girl and doing other things at the same time. She is not held against me like she would be in a moby. I wanted a moby too but could not afford to buy both.

I love your blog and am getting back to reading it after a short break while we got used to having four kiddos around :-)

I’ve always carried our babies in the Bjorn, and have loved it. Our #6 is three months old, and as my body has aged, I can tell that my shoulder strength just isn’t what it once was.

I would love something that I could use without feeling shoulder stiffness after a few hours!

I carried my first two a lot, and learned how to do lots of things one handed and picked up alot of things with my feet. I think I am going to need both hands free with 5 and 3 year olds running around this time. Hope I win.

I looked at the site and I really don’t know which I’d choose. I think I’d prefer a fun color though. I tried a sling with my first and she hated it. I am having identical twin girls in about 6-8 weeks so I would love to win a Moby. I’m not quite sure how I’m going to tend to a toddler and care for 2 babies at once. I guess we’ll figure it out as we go along, but a moby would really come in handy.

I would choose the Sky Blue Born Free wrap.

My baby-wearing has evolved with nearly each of my 6 kids. I was given two different front-pack carriers with my first. I don’t even remember what brand they were. After having baby #3, I felt like I hit the jackpot when I bought a Baby Bjorn at a garage sale for $10. I still use it occasionally when I want my child facing outward. By the time I had baby #5, I was more convinced about wrap carriers, but didn’t want to justify the cost. So, I bought 5 yards of fabric to use and started wrapping. I figured out the various carry positions, but practicality bit me in the rear end. You see, I decided on a fabric that I liked well enough that when I was done using it for a wrap, I could sew it into something else (5 yards is a lot of fabric!). So the fabric I ended up with wasn’t very stretchy. That meant that when I wrapped the baby as snuggly as I could, as I wore her the fabric would slide ever so slightly, loosening the hold. It wasn’t comfortable to wear her when I didn’t feel like she was secure, so that didn’t last long. When I was pregnant with #6, I was convinced the Ergo was the solution to all my baby-wearing woes. I scoured craigslist and finally bought a used Ergo. After having #6, I learned it wasn’t exactly perfect, nor easy to use with a newborn, and I cannot front-carry the baby facing out. :( Just a couple of months ago, a good friend was given a Moby for her new baby. I happened to be the one there when she decided to try it for the first time. Being familiar with the various carries, it was easy to get her wrapped up and her baby snuggled in for our walk to the park. The whole time we were out, she commented how comfortable it was and how much she liked it. I’d love to use one myself now. My baby is very small for his age, so I’m sure we’d get a lot of use out if it still. And, if God gives us another baby, I’ll surely follow your example with using the Moby and the Ergo simultaneously.

I’d choose the organic in eggplant. It looks beautiful! I’ve tried various slings and such. I have an ergo that I love. The Moby is appealing because you said it keeps the baby close. I struggle with getting things done in other carriers b/c the baby is out so far in front. I’ll certainly have to look into it this next time around.
