As a mom of many living on one income, you generally won’t find me shopping in the mall for children’s clothing. I generally shop second-hand at thrift stores or yard sales. However, one thing that I learned very early in my quest to clothe our children on less is that if I purchase something new, I’m better off purchasing from a higher-end retailer.
I learned this the hard way when someone gave us money to buy Amber (then 4) some new clothes. We headed to a local discount store and were able to purchase five outfits with the small check.
Great deal, right?
With two younger girls who would have been able to wear the hand-me-downs, we regretted our decision the first time the clothes came out of the wash.
The truth of the matter is that sometimes spending more is being frugal.
This can be especially true in a family where clothing can be passed down and used by multiple children.
It is also true when you choose to buy a few classically designed, high-quality items for your child to wear as opposed to scores of trendy, less expensive clothes that will over-stuff your child’s drawers and closet.
With their thoughtful designs and attention to quality and detail, babyGap and GapKids provides all of this and is one of my go-to brands when it comes to purchasing clothing for the kids. I trust Gap because I know that their clothes wash and wear well and are cute to boot.
Gap has always offered a classic style with exceptional quality and their new line for ‘back-to-school’, The Portobello Road Collection, based on 1969 denim, is no exception. Sweet dresses, ruffled tops, rugged jeans and layers (I’m lovin’ those layers) all with Gap quality, style and durability.
I love that Gap offers all the ‘look-at-me’ cute pieces, extra accessories (love the hats for the boys) and layers that make an outfit exceptional, but they also offer classy single pieces with simple style and charm for real, everyday kids who live a real, everyday life.
Now allow me to be frank, since moving to a large city, I’ve been able to, almost exclusively, clothe our children in high-end, quality clothing by buying used (and I’m always looking for that trustworthy Gap symbol) but during our years in small town USA, I just didn’t have that option. Instead I watched the sales and stocked up on clothing when the retailers were serious about drawing people in, like during the ‘back-to-school’ sales.
Homeschoolers have the luxury of ignoring much of the back-to-school hoopla, but it’s helpful to keep one eye open in order to snag deals that will be beneficial to your family.
Here’s one that you don’t want to miss. Right now (8/5-8/17) Gap is offering their kids and baby jeans starting at just $15!
That’s $15 for the classic in kid’s jeans. $15 for jeans that even my children have a hard time wearing out!
Don’t have a Gap in your area or dread the thought of clothes shopping with a troop of little ones? Gap online offers everyday free shipping on orders over $50. And while you’re there be sure to check out their sales page for discounts on their off season clothing and stock up for next year.
To make shopping at Gap this year even more appealing Gap is giving one Raising Olives’ reader a $25 Gap gift card.
