A Family Bible Study Guide for Proverbs {Giveaway}

When Mark and I first heard Kevin Swanson from Generations with Vision speak on Raising a Mighty Man of God (This is well worth the time to listen. Kevin believes that our educational system, including homeschooling, is harming boys.  The lecture begins at minute 12.), we knew that we wanted to hear more.

Kevin is a fellow second generation homeschooler. He has a vision for restoring the family, for training young men to be valiant warriors for Christ and for turning to the Bible as the authority for everything, even education. He teaches something that Mark and I believed, but had not seen taught in Christian circles, namely that the Bible is sufficient even for the education of our children.

God has actually dedicated an entire book of the Bible to the subject of transmitting knowledge, wisdom, and understanding to a child. This book —Proverbs— is Education/Knowledge/Wisdom 101, authored by God….This gives us both the method and content of a child’s education and provides the basic corpus of knowledge God requires of young people.

As I considered these things, I became deeply convicted that my children were better educated in Saxon math and the laws of grammar than they were in the book of Proverbs.

As Kevin sought to bring his educational priorities into line with what he saw as God’s educational priorities, he set about the task of more conscientiously teaching his children from the book of Proverbs. He did this by expositing and applying every verse in the book. This three volume study guide for the book of Proverbs is the result of those efforts.

Each section of these guides starts with the verse or verses that are being discussed. Since Kevin is dealing with only one to a few verses at a time, it’s easy for even little children to memorize the passage you will be discussing. Once the verse is memorized they are better able to follow the discussion.

Following the verse or verses are modern day applications and illustrations of the principles being taught. Kevin applies the Proverbs to the unique difficulties that we face in the world around us. These applications and thoughts provide a good starting place for evaluating the culture around us as well as applying the verses to the particular sins or areas of struggle in your own life or family.

Each section ends with some family discussion questions to encourage further thought and reflection on the principles introduced and taught.

Kevin’s study guides are a good starting place for family worship,  application of regular Proverbs readings, or a Proverbs study incorporated into your school day. Particularly useful for those just beginning the practice of regular family worship, ‘The Book of Proverbs: God’s Book of Wisdom’ also offers a solid starting place for anyone who desires to study the Proverbs more thoroughly.

    It’s been a few years since we have studied Proverbs. This reminds me how important it is to camp there peroidically. We’d love to do it with this study.

    I think as a family it would be so beneficial to study the book of Proverbs together. And we have always been blessed by any teaching we have heard from Kevin Swanson.

    The comments about our children being more versed in math than the Bible, made my heart sad. This is true for my children. We read the bible every day but don’t study and apply it. This set would be such a great resource to begin family worship!

    I was so excited to see this giveaway today! We have the first volume and would love to win #2 and #3 (and give #1 to someone we know that would love it and use it!). Kevin Swanson is very encouraging and his materials clearly represent the Word of God and what we believe to be a very correct exegesis of the text. We have had the blessing of being in worship with his congregation a few times and each time, I have never felt so convicted and yet so incredibly encouraged at the same time! We also enjoy listening to his radio program (online for us) nearly every evening before turning in! We love to hear the happenings of our day from a Godly perspective so that it will prepare us to approach life and others when keeping in check our Biblical basis for doing the things we do.

    Finally, we have been using his Proverbs study guide #1 as our family worship text the last few weeks. We would love to continue this as our family worship study guide. We want to continue to be bathing our family with the words of wisdom from Proverbs (as us sinners need to be constantly reminding ourselves and reading, rereading, reading some more and then rereading…. and oh yeah – reread again!) :) Thank you so much for the chance to win!!

    i would love to win these as we are working through his Genesis book and it is awesome! we have been traveling for a month and still have another month before we get into a new house, so these would be great in the hotel, with six children, who need activities as most our books were sent with the movers and it is really really cold out here in Alaska!

    My oldest is 3 and while we read him the Bible every day, it’s not much of a ‘family worship’ time like we’d like. I’d love a good resource like this for our family!
