A Family Bible Study Guide for Proverbs {Giveaway}

When Mark and I first heard Kevin Swanson from Generations with Vision speak on Raising a Mighty Man of God (This is well worth the time to listen. Kevin believes that our educational system, including homeschooling, is harming boys.  The lecture begins at minute 12.), we knew that we wanted to hear more.

Kevin is a fellow second generation homeschooler. He has a vision for restoring the family, for training young men to be valiant warriors for Christ and for turning to the Bible as the authority for everything, even education. He teaches something that Mark and I believed, but had not seen taught in Christian circles, namely that the Bible is sufficient even for the education of our children.

God has actually dedicated an entire book of the Bible to the subject of transmitting knowledge, wisdom, and understanding to a child. This book —Proverbs— is Education/Knowledge/Wisdom 101, authored by God….This gives us both the method and content of a child’s education and provides the basic corpus of knowledge God requires of young people.

As I considered these things, I became deeply convicted that my children were better educated in Saxon math and the laws of grammar than they were in the book of Proverbs.

As Kevin sought to bring his educational priorities into line with what he saw as God’s educational priorities, he set about the task of more conscientiously teaching his children from the book of Proverbs. He did this by expositing and applying every verse in the book. This three volume study guide for the book of Proverbs is the result of those efforts.

Each section of these guides starts with the verse or verses that are being discussed. Since Kevin is dealing with only one to a few verses at a time, it’s easy for even little children to memorize the passage you will be discussing. Once the verse is memorized they are better able to follow the discussion.

Following the verse or verses are modern day applications and illustrations of the principles being taught. Kevin applies the Proverbs to the unique difficulties that we face in the world around us. These applications and thoughts provide a good starting place for evaluating the culture around us as well as applying the verses to the particular sins or areas of struggle in your own life or family.

Each section ends with some family discussion questions to encourage further thought and reflection on the principles introduced and taught.

Kevin’s study guides are a good starting place for family worship,  application of regular Proverbs readings, or a Proverbs study incorporated into your school day. Particularly useful for those just beginning the practice of regular family worship, ‘The Book of Proverbs: God’s Book of Wisdom’ also offers a solid starting place for anyone who desires to study the Proverbs more thoroughly.

I would love to win this set! I was actually looking at them when I was searching around on your site a day or two ago, but my hubby is unexpectedly laid off for a week or two, so we have to watch our pennies 🙂 I have 4 children that I homeschool. We do ‘Keys for Kids’ and my older girls have their own devotionals, but this would give us another devotion/study to do as a family. Thanks for the chance to win!

OOOOPS….I saw these on ‘Generation Cedar’s’ website. Either way, they look amazing and I’m excited for the chance to win 🙂

We have six wonderful children and have trouble consistently doing Bible studies as a family….We are a military family and my husband has proudly served his country for over 18 yrs but affording a $50 study is not part of the budget. Growing my children closer to the Lord is my daily goal and I think this could help…

I would love to win this set of books to work through with my children. My husband is no longer living in the home and I think these books would be a great way to bring out subjects with my sons as well as my daughters that we can discuss to better prepare them for life. I have had to get a part time job to support us (8 children still at home) and am still homeschooling so having something already written that I don’t have to preplan is a huge plus! Thanks so much for a chance to win!

I have been praying about what to use for biblical teaching for our six kids. Three of them are recently adopted, and their maturity and understanding is a bit lacking. I thought Proverbs were simplistic enough for beginners like them. My husband is losing his sight and I will be the one reading and teaching, so I feel confident with Proverbs as well.

I am so excited about the prospect of winning this set of books for Bible study and characater training for our three daughters. My husband and I have recently been trying to find a way to incorporate family worship and Biblical character training into our schooling at home. In recent years, since we began homeschooling, we have felt like we are trying to instill Biblical truths into the way we and our children live their lives and so many others around us don’t feel the strong pull to living out the Bible. I realize we all have different convictions and don’t want to sound legalistic, but the Bible is and should be the guide to living our lives. We have purchased Polished Cornerstones from Doorposts and Systematic Theology, by Wayne Grudem. My youngest was reading from Proverbs last night to our family before bed. I love Proverbs and these study books would be a great asset in our home. I also do daycare in my home and do Bible lessons with the little ones in my care. I consider doing daycare to be a ministry within our home and Proverbs are such a great way to get little ones to memorize and be eager to learn the word of God. Thanks for reading my post and have a great day shining in the Son☼!

I’ve been starting our school day with Proverbs for almost our entire homeschooling career (23 years). This would be helpful to incorporate some deeper teaching into our study. We have his book on the Psalms. My oldest son has edited several videos that The Homeschool Channel has done with Kevin and really appreciates his teachings. I appreciate that my son has a job where he is not only learning pratical skills, but learns from some great speakers such as Kevin Swanson and Voddie Baucham!

We decided at the beginning of the “school year” to start reading through Proverbs every day, reading a few verses or sections a day (mainly because of your site). We spent a little time looking for a resource like this as I find it hard to always have excellent applications for the verses and didn’t find anything. I studied the book of Proverbs with my first three teenage sons when they were very young and sporadically throughout the years. We read the corresponding Proverb for the day. I credit much of their integrity and good reputation among both believers and non-believers to having diligently read the book of Proverbs. Now, as I’m seeking to instill the same values among my younger three children, we’ve gone back to Proverbs yet again. While I would love to win this set (I would really love to win it!), someone else might need it more, but I wanted to agree that studying Proverbs is maybe one of the most valuable lessons we can instill in our children.

“I wanted to agree that studying Proverbs is maybe one of the most valuable lessons we can instill in our children.” (quoting myself =D) I forgot to add it is one of the most valuable lessons we can instill in our children AND ourselves. I cannot wait to listen to the “Raising a Mighty Man of God”. From what you have described about this set, it seems like a wonderful Family Worship. Thank you SO much for this wonderful opportunity to win!

This giveaway has come as I have been praying for the right study guide for our family worship. I struggle when things are laid out before me and I have to try and piece together when I don’t feel I have enough knowledge. I always underestimate what might keep the kids interested and lose them long before we have memorized what we should know. Thank you for this giveaway.

We are a military family who believe homeschooling has been an answer to prayer! We’ve had an atypical kinda of military experience and have had to relocate more than the usual, so it’s been particularly challenging trying to stay consistent and motivated while keeping our son (and our little ones) excited about learning. I do several different things to keep time in God’s word at the forefront, but honestly, I never know where to start or how to apply it appropriately! I would love this because I’ve been searching for Christian education that will integrate seamlessly into our lifestyle and promote more family time, even when Daddy is away! I think this set will be perfect for us! Even if I don’t win, I will definitely be adding this to our life! Thanks for sharing these with us! It sounds amazing!

I know my children need wisdom, but I need it too! This would be a great resource for our family.

I am also interested in what you said about schooling (even homeschooling) harming our boys. I have one boy and 3 girls, so far, and I only had sisters growing up. I am really at a loss when it comes to wisdom in raising a boy–they really are different! Mine is currently in the “terrible twos” and training has been more of a challenge with him, as opposed to the 2 older girls. He is teachable, it just takes more repetition. I don’t yet know what it’s going to be like to school him. I recently got the book “Raising Real Men” by the Youngs, but I haven’t read it yet. I am going to look into the info you linked above. Thanks!

My husband has just recently stepped up and taken his place as an amazing spirtual leader in our house and this would be such a blessing for us to have a tool like this to use. We have six children and we homeschool so we are always learning together. I would be thankful to have something that we could use to teach them more about God’s word.

I am preparing to homeschool my son, and I would love having this resource. I did a brief study over Proverbs last year and was amazed by how much I learned. I feel my family and I would be incredibly blessed by this in-depth study.

Wow what an answer to prayer. I have been feeling God tugging my heart to adjust our homeschooling to grow straight out of the Bible rather than just incorporate the Bible into our schedule. I felt that he was convicting me that I needed to change our starting point. But truthfully I feel overwhelmed with the overhaul in front of us. This resource is just the help I’ve been asking Him for. Thanks for introducing it to me!

Wow! What an amazing calling you and your husband have embraced: rearing your children in a Godly home with God’s love woven throughout everything you do. I am in awe. I am a single mom to 3 children. I was a SAHM before my divorce and I miss that life. I would love to have the Study Guide for Proverbs to walk through on a daily basis with my little ones. I know these are the impressionable years and I want to do all I can to leave God’s imprint on their hearts. Thanks for a wonderful ministry to your children….and to other moms like me!

Wow! I would love to read this. I recently changed the way I homeschool my five children because I felt the Bible was an “add-on” rather than our focus. We have just started a study in Proverbs and this would be an awesome resource to have. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!!

I would love to win. God convicted me about seven years ago to start doing family worship every night with the kids. More than just reading the Bible to them when I put them to sleep. It was hard to do it often when my ex-husband disagreed and would interrupt it( he was not then nor now, walking and has since left us) but I KNEW God was convicting me of its importance and so I persevered and I have seen the benefit in my children and Proverbs was the book we chose to study right after their dad left us. It was such a blessing and I would love to do a more intense discussion of the book.

The Bible says “wisdom is supreme, therefore get wisdom.” I am a mom of 3 and currently my husband is working away. I am teary eyed as I read your page because I desire wisdom in raising my children in Godliness and Holiness and raising them to please the Lord and be mighty warriors for His kingdom! We are pursuing homeschooling and I totally have the highest utmost respect for families who are doing this and have walked in my shoes having 3 small children (4,2, and 5months). I admire your family and would give anything to glean from your wisdom! Thanks for your consideration in this contest 🙂

Hello, We started just six months ago with homeschooling. To start we moved from the Netherlands to Belgium, so we would not get in trouble with the laws there are in Holland about homeschooling. Our start is really a good start. But like all new starts are is a big change for us as a family, moving, homeschooling. We really need some good books to learn our children and ourselfs how to grow in all this. Thank you for letting us take a part in this contest, and for giving advice and things to think about at your facebook account. Bye, God bless you.

This study sounds wonderful! We are new to homeschooling and I have been struggling with the battle of the mind of what we really need to be teaching the kids. Sometimes it’s hard to embrace what I feel is most important (spiritual/life skills knowledge) and what I think is expected (academics). I was so excited to see this giveaway today! We have the first volume and would love to win #2 and #3 (and give #1 to someone we know that would love it and use it!). Kevin Swanson is very encouraging and his materials clearly represent the Word of God and what we believe to be a very correct exegesis of the text. We have had the blessing of being in worship with his congregation a few times and each time, I have never felt so convicted and yet so incredibly encouraged at the same time! We also enjoy listening to his radio program (online for us) nearly every evening before turning in! We love to hear the happenings of our day from a Godly perspective so that it will prepare us to approach life and others when keeping in check our Biblical basis for doing the things we do.

Finally, we have been using his Proverbs study guide #1 as our family worship text the last few weeks. We would love to continue this as our family worship study guide. We want to continue to be bathing our family with the words of wisdom from Proverbs (as us sinners need to be constantly reminding ourselves and reading, rereading, reading some more and then rereading…. and oh yeah – reread again!) 🙂 Thank you so much for the chance to win!!

I would like to win this because it looks like a great way to teach the children more about the Bible. Thank you.

We are always looking for a good Bible study for our family devotions. This looks wonderful!

I have some 2 young men in our family that I would like to impart the Proverbs to. It would give my husband a tool to help him lead our family in worship. Thanks!
