A Family Bible Study Guide for Proverbs {Giveaway}

When Mark and I first heard Kevin Swanson from Generations with Vision speak on Raising a Mighty Man of God (This is well worth the time to listen. Kevin believes that our educational system, including homeschooling, is harming boys.  The lecture begins at minute 12.), we knew that we wanted to hear more.

Kevin is a fellow second generation homeschooler. He has a vision for restoring the family, for training young men to be valiant warriors for Christ and for turning to the Bible as the authority for everything, even education. He teaches something that Mark and I believed, but had not seen taught in Christian circles, namely that the Bible is sufficient even for the education of our children.

God has actually dedicated an entire book of the Bible to the subject of transmitting knowledge, wisdom, and understanding to a child. This book —Proverbs— is Education/Knowledge/Wisdom 101, authored by God….This gives us both the method and content of a child’s education and provides the basic corpus of knowledge God requires of young people.

As I considered these things, I became deeply convicted that my children were better educated in Saxon math and the laws of grammar than they were in the book of Proverbs.

As Kevin sought to bring his educational priorities into line with what he saw as God’s educational priorities, he set about the task of more conscientiously teaching his children from the book of Proverbs. He did this by expositing and applying every verse in the book. This three volume study guide for the book of Proverbs is the result of those efforts.

Each section of these guides starts with the verse or verses that are being discussed. Since Kevin is dealing with only one to a few verses at a time, it’s easy for even little children to memorize the passage you will be discussing. Once the verse is memorized they are better able to follow the discussion.

Following the verse or verses are modern day applications and illustrations of the principles being taught. Kevin applies the Proverbs to the unique difficulties that we face in the world around us. These applications and thoughts provide a good starting place for evaluating the culture around us as well as applying the verses to the particular sins or areas of struggle in your own life or family.

Each section ends with some family discussion questions to encourage further thought and reflection on the principles introduced and taught.

Kevin’s study guides are a good starting place for family worship,  application of regular Proverbs readings, or a Proverbs study incorporated into your school day. Particularly useful for those just beginning the practice of regular family worship, ‘The Book of Proverbs: God’s Book of Wisdom’ also offers a solid starting place for anyone who desires to study the Proverbs more thoroughly.

    I would also like this study. I think it would be so beneficial to really dig into proverbs – more than just read them. I know it would help everyone’s character, especially mine, so I could be a good model of it for the kids!

    Hello, We started just six months ago with homeschooling. To start we moved from the Netherlands to Belgium, so we would not get in trouble with the laws there are in Holland about homeschooling. Our start is really a good start. But like all new starts are is a big change for us as a family, moving, homeschooling. We really need some good books to learn our children and ourselfs how to grow in all this. Thank you for letting us take a part in this contest, and for giving advice and things to think about at your facebook account. Bye, God bless you.

    I didn’t leave a comment here for a few days because I wasn’t sure I wanted/needed this study tool. Then in my times with the Lord in the morning, I happened to begin reading in Proverbs again. As I did, this post came to mind and I grasped the concept of the books much better. Now, I am really curious!

    The Lord knows I need more wisdom! The kids and I try to read a proverbs a day. That way we read the whole book every month. I told a friend once “Why couldn’t God have given my kids just a little more common sense?” She replied, “That is why they have you.” I would love the proverbs study for myself and my family.

    This study sounds wonderful! We are new to homeschooling and I have been struggling with the battle of the mind of what we really need to be teaching the kids. Sometimes it’s hard to embrace what I feel is most important (spiritual/life skills knowledge) and what I think is expected (academics). I’ve been thinking about a family Bible study in addition to our devotionals, so this would be great! Thank you for offering the giveaway!

    It would mean so much to me and my family to win this. I’ve just become a stay at home mom and feel overwelmed and concerned as well as excited. My husband and I have 4 boys and 2 girls. The boys are full of energy. Our youngest just turned 3 and we lost the financing for preschool for him. I’m searching for way to teach my family the Word and believe this would be a great tool.
