Pregnancy #11 Update: 20 Weeks and Gender

We’re at the half way mark in this pregnancy and this second trimester has been smooth sailing. I have lots of energy and in the past few weeks our home has returned to it’s normal, busy pace. Earlier this week we even rearranged furniture and deep cleaned in our main living areas.

The Olive children on Easter Sunday - Amber (15), Kaitlin (14), Matthew (12), Alyssa (11), Carter (10), Sadie (8), Savannah (7), Colby (5), Nick (3) and Isabella (1)

My singular concession to this pregnancy is that I’m trying to get to bed a little earlier than usual. By evening I’m tired. I’m not willing to say it’s all pregnancy because our days have been jam packed, but whatever the cause getting a good nights sleep has become a necessity.

Bella (21 months) is finally sleeping through the night and so, for the first time in nearly 2 years, am I.

Tomorrow is our big ultrasound scan where they check the baby from head to toe to make sure that everything looks like it’s developing properly. We’ll also probably find out the gender of the baby.

A few evenings ago our family, plus our company, guessed the baby’s gender. We thought it would be fun to let you in on guessing.

Nine of us guessed boy and five of us guessed girl.

I’ve been correct on guessing gender for 8 (I guessed boy) of the 10 and Mark has been correct twice (he guessed girl).

Our gender pattern has been girl, girl, boy, girl, boy, girl, girl, boy, boy, girl.

I do not carry differently with boys/girls nor feel more sick with one or the other.

The only thing that seems to have worked as an indicator of gender (sometimes) is the baby’s heart rate, high rate = girl, low rate = boy.

This baby’s heart rate has been 155, Mark says that means girl.

Your turn: Boy or Girl?

How is your pregnancy progressing? Any new babies?

Wow – first, congratulations! I won’t hazard a guess as to gender, as I’m sure either a boy or a girl will be another amazing blessing to your family.

I’m 21 weeks along with my 5th, and found out last week that we’re having a girl after 4 boys. I’m humbled and grateful, but also a little apprehensive.

Was there ever a time when you felt that you just weren’t equipped to deal with the situation God had given you?

Congratulations, Tori! 6 months ago we had our first girl after 3 boys. So far it has been such a fun blessing to see our boyish & blue home inundated with pink and butterflies. And the boys are crazy about their little sister!

    To Kimberly, I guess boy!

    Hi Tori,

and congrats to your little girl. I am 18 weeks pregnant with baby #5. We too have 4 boys and guessing for the gender of this new blessing of ours like crazy this time. My ultrasound will be next Friday – can’t wait to go!:)

First, I felt, we have a baby girl, because this pregnancy is a little different than the others were. (I have severe all-day long morning sickness with all of them, and it lasts for some more weeks every time. This time, I got better sooner than I usually thought I would.)

So first, I thought, it might be a girl, but I am not so sure any more. I cannot guess the gender, because each time I wished for a boy – and this time too.:) I think I would feel exactly the same way as you, if it was a ‘she’ for us.

But God will equip you step by step as it was with your four boys.:) Don’t worry, just rest in Him: He will guide you wiht this little girl of yours.

To Kimberly, I think it is a boy – it’s not really a guess, but a wish.:) Either ways he or she will be a blessing to Olive family and so God bless you and your pregnancy (and rest, rest, rest)!:)

    Sorry for the long comment…

Oh, Esther! Congratulations! It’s strange, but I really wished for a girl with my last two, and they turned out to be boys. This time, the pregnancy has been dramatically different from all the others. And now, when I’ve made peace with having all boys, here we are with a girl on the way. ;D Who says God doesn’t have a sense of humor?!

    Hi Tori.

Was there ever a time when you felt that you just weren’t equipped to deal with the situation God had given you?

Absolutely and frequently! That’s when I’m forced to walk by faith and not by sight. It’s when I realize the truth that I am nothing and that He is everything.

My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

May the power of Christ rest upon you and may you enjoy the special blessing of a little girl!

What lovely Resurrection Sunday family pictures! Won’t be long and another sweet blessing to be added to the group photo…

The high/low heartbeat served us as an indicator too…so “girl” it is, IMO. Either way, sweet baby preciousness!

Continued prayers for health {AND ENERGY} the remainder of your pregnancy. Praise the Lord for the blessing of all those helpers!

Congratulations! I’m glad you’re feeling pretty good.
I have a friend who has ten or eleven, maybe twelve (I lost count!) children. She and her husband ALWAYS guess the baby’s gender correctly and know how to plan accordingly. Her secret? ALL or her children have been born in a pattern: Girl, boy, girl, boy, girl, miscarriage (they think it was a boy), girl, boy, girl, boy. Actually, after I started typing this, I’m pretty certain she had ten at last count, because I know the last one that I know of was a boy and I’m farely certain she didn’t have twelve.

Congratulations on all the family excitement! I just had our sixth baby 8wks ago (a boy) He is our fifth boy and we have one girl. :) I guessed correctly on his gender and my hubby thought he was a girl! But I’m guessing boy for you! My oldest boy’s heartrate was in the 160′s and they thought for sure he’d be a girl b/c of that, but nope! He’s ALL boy! lol Can’t wait to see what your next blessing will be!

I have 8. 6 boys, including our newest who is just turning 2 months old, and 2 girls. Heart rate is a good indicator, but 155 is borderline in our family…gotta get up to/over 160 to be sure it is a girl.

I was right on the first four (including the girls), after that I didn’t try to say for sure, because I wanted a girl, but didn’t feel sure of either…got 4 more boys…ad they are momma’s buddies.

I am not good at guessing the gender of other people’s babies. Although with mine I have pretty much been right each time. I am pregnant with my 6th child, my 3rd boy and I pretty much knew he was a boy from the start. I usually change my mind a few times before I find out, but with him I was pretty certain. I have more digestive issues with boys lol.

Here’s a sure-fire way to know whether it’s a boy or girl: What are most of your friends having? If most of them are having girls, then it’s probably a girl. If most of them are having boys, then most likely it’s a boy. It’s something in the water! =D

I’m going to go with YOUR guess and say it’s a boy. I think the mama’s gut feeling is as good an indicator as any. I was almost always right about mine too (have had 9). So excited for you! I’m enjoying my newborn…and in a few short months…you will be too!! : ) (Yours…that is. : ) )

    [Reply]

    Kimberly @ Raising Olives Reply:

    Natalie,

If you want to go with my gut feeling, then you should pick girl.

Every time I think of this baby, I think girl and even though we always call our ‘unknowns’ ‘he’, I can’t help calling this one she. I justify all this by saying, “It’s because our last baby was a girl” and “we’ve had more girls than boys.” and so, I voted boy. ;)

    We’ll see tomorrow.

I don’t know about heart rates but I’ve heard the carring high/low thing. But for me (I have 4 so far, ds-almost 17, dd-13, dd-11 and ds-almost 10) I carried the boys where I looked like I was carring a basketball.

I’m going to say a boy, you need evening up some so a boy next time as well. Lol

Congratulations. So fun. I just adopted in January, and wasn’t good at guessing the gender there. We were open to anything God had for us, but I was sure feeling like he was going to bring us a girl……he brought us a precious boy on January 29th! He is amazing and just fits in perfectly with us. Glad I was wrong, I love that little boy! All this to say, I won’t bother guessing the gender of yours :-) (I guessed wrong with my other two children as well, both of them were biological and my first I guessed a boy and she was a girl, my second I guessed a girl and he was a boy, lol)

oooh… One one count I would go with Mark- not so much because of the heart rate in general, but if that has been your pattern…but I won’t go against Mama’s intuition…so I say BOY :D
Since I only have one boy and two girls so far, I amnot totally sure if I have anything thing indicates more boy or girl. with both girls, regardless of weight gain, I noticed that I got puffy in my face ( and haven’t this time), but I am not sure if that wasn’t just because I as older with those pregnancies than I had been in my first and only boy pregnancy..or what. So far, until this one, our heart rates have been very similar. This one is verrrry lo, especially compared to my others, but it is also a much bigger baby. Anyhow, I can’t help but feel like it is a boy now, and in all honesty, if he shows up a she at this point, I would be genuinely suprised. Intuition-wise, I have never been good at calling genders early on, but by the time our babies have been born, I was so sure feeling of what they were that i would have been shocked if they hadn’t turned out to be what they are….we shall see if it works out that way this time :D Just a few more weeks:)

The heart rate way to guess was never much help for us. We had twin boys 9 weeks ago. I was guessing boy, but not twins when we went for the ultrasound! Anyway that makes 3 girls and 4 boys for us. We have typically followed a boy/girl pattern (interupted by miscarriage also). So I would guess boy, but either way congratulations! I hope you get lots of rest till this new little one makes his appearance.

I’m going to go with BOY. I am 29 wks with our fourth child. I have been struggling with circulation probs in my legs, but after much prayer over me from faithful friends in Christ, I am feeling relief! Praise Jesus!! :) I have a boy, girl, boy. I knew with all of mine, even when I didn’t find out the gender via sono, but I have no ‘gut feeling’ this time… I’m completely at a loss. We had a sono to make sure everything was developing well, but did not want to know the gender. I love surprises, so I guess the Lord’s letting me be COMPLETELY surprised this time, having no intuition! :) Glad to hear all is well with you and your growing family! Haha, I looked at the picture of your kids and it looks like so many…. but I come from a family of 10 kids as well. When you’re in the family, it doesn’t seem like so many (and sometimes, we still feel like we’re missing someone). I guess that’s why people have interesting looks on their faces when we file past in the store – it looks like a ton. =)

    [Reply]

    Kimberly @ Raising Olives Reply:

I have that experience when we’re out and see a large family. I think, “Wow, look at all those kids!” and then realize they have less than us.

And you’re right, when you’re part of a large family, it doesn’t seem like a lot of people. Mark and I often look around at the kids gathered together and think, “Is this it? It seems like 10 kids should be more than this.”

I am 19 weeks along with baby #6! Our ultrasound is scheduled for next Friday, but we are not planning to find out the gender…we LOVE the surprise on the “birth day”!! We have boy, boy, girl, girl, girl…so far. My kids are also excited to wait until the baby is born to know who God has chosen to place in our family next. So fun. My pregnancy symptoms never seem to differ between boy/girl…and the heart rate strategy has never worked for us either. So I am clueless…We shall see. A girl would be nice because I am stocked on hand-me-downs. Been 8 yrs. since I had a boy, and I already passed a lot of those little boy clothes on to people who could use them at the time. I’m sure if we have a boy, though, God will send clothes from some where to go with him! :)

    Sara Reply:

How funny! We are pregnant with baby #6 and I am just about 19 weeks also! Our oldest is 7 yrs old and our pattern is boy, boy, girl, girl, boy. I’ve been hoping for a girl this whole pregnancy and I think we may be right, an early ultra sound showed about true a couple of weeks ago and the 20 week one will be next week. My pregnancies have been pretty neutral, but my labors have been gender specific, boys are long and girls are fast! Maybe that’s why I’m hoping for a girl this time around!

My guess is that it’s a girl – just because of what your husband indicated about the heart rate. My little unborn is quite a mover, even though he/she was sleeping when I had the ultrasound. This is very different from my little girl who couldn’t stop wriggling when I had the ultrasound with her. So my husband is guessing it’s a boy (and I initially carried much worse with this 2nd one)so maybe he’s right – but I’m not game to venture a guess!
